French Paintings.
French Toast Paintings. Exhibition 2003
French Toast is a show of French paintings which have been inspired by
my frequent visits to France over the past year. It reflects my ongoing
love affair with the country's lovely old towns and villages.
The paintings focus mainly on buildings and street scenes, particularly
in Brittany and the Dordogne. "I continue to sketch and make notes
even when I'm sitting at a pavement cafe having my first coffee and croissant
of the day! I am fascinated by the different angles of the shutters, awnings
and rooftops. I paint in lots of thin layers to try and capture their
quirkiness! My colours also change the further south I go - they become
alot more sun-drenched."
I find it particularly appropriate when painting these street scenes to
continue exploring the idea of using two canvases linked to make one painting.
There are several of these large paintings in the show and somehow they
manage to evoke a strong feeling of being in France"
